How does car transport between Spain and the Netherlands work?

Car transport between Spain and the Netherlands almost always goes by road. Your vehicle is loaded onto a car transporter, open or enclosed, and brought safely to its destination. Driving it yourself is an option, but it quickly means two long days, fuel, tolls, an overnight stay and a lot of mileage on your car.

Broadly, there are three options:

  • Open car transporter, the most affordable option for a standard passenger car.
  • Enclosed car transporter, extra protection from weather and dust, ideal for youngtimers, classic cars and exclusive vehicles.
  • Travelling on a fixed route, your car rides on a scheduled trip between the two countries. The lorry is heading that way anyway, so there are no empty kilometres and the price stays sharp.

Handy to know: Spain and the Netherlands (often called Holland) are both EU countries, so there is no customs and free movement of goods applies. Importing may still involve a registration or number plate, more on that below.

What does car transport from Spain to the Netherlands cost?

The price for car transport from Spain to the Netherlands depends mainly on the distance, the destination, the vehicle type and whether the car is roadworthy. For a standard passenger car on a fixed route, expect indicatively:

Region / destination Estimate, passenger car
Northern Spain / Barcelonafrom approx. €800
Madrid (central)approx. €850-900
Valencia / Alicanteapprox. €900-950
Southern Spain / Málagaapprox. €1,050-1,200

Please note: these are indicative market prices (excl. VAT) for a roadworthy standard passenger car on a fixed route. You receive the exact price in a tailored quote.

What affects the price?

  • Destination and distance, the further south, the higher the price.
  • Vehicle type, a large SUV, van or camper needs more room.
  • Roadworthy or not, a broken-down vehicle needs extra equipment (winch, ramps).
  • Open or enclosed transport, enclosed costs more but protects better.
  • Pickup at your address or at a fixed point, door-to-door is more convenient, a fixed point is often cheaper.
  • Season, it is busier around the start and end of the wintering season.

How long does car transport to Spain or the Netherlands take?

Expect around 3 to 7 working days, depending on the route, the destination and the planning. If the transporter runs fixed lines between the two countries, there are more departure slots and the lead time is easier to plan. Express transport can be faster, but is usually more expensive.

The distance itself (over 1,800 km to Málaga, for example) is only part of the story. The pickup and delivery locations and the availability of a place on the transporter also determine exactly when your car leaves and arrives.

“The biggest saving is in the route itself. Because we already run loaded trips between the Netherlands and Spain every week, we let cars ride along on journeys that are already happening, which cuts out empty kilometres and lowers the cost for the customer.”

Who is car transport for?

  • The wintering season is ending and you want your car back in the Netherlands.
  • You are moving back to the Netherlands and taking your vehicle with you.
  • You have bought a car in Spain and want it imported.
  • A classic or youngtimer you want brought back with protection.
  • A car dealer moving vehicles from Spain to the Netherlands.
  • You have a second home in Spain and want your own car there.
  • You are a winter resident who would rather fly than drive.
  • You are emigrating or (temporarily) living or working in Spain.
  • The vehicle is not roadworthy or unsuitable for long distances.
  • A company moving vehicles from the Netherlands to Spain.

How does the transport work, step by step?

  1. Request a quote, you provide the pickup and delivery location, make/model and the desired period.
  2. Confirm the planning, you receive a price and a pickup date is scheduled.
  3. Loading & securing, the car is carefully loaded, professionally secured and documented with photos.
  4. In transit, you are kept informed of the transport’s progress.
  5. Delivery, the vehicle is delivered damage-free at the agreed location and checked together.

Insurance, safety and EU rules

During transport, your vehicle should be insured through the carrier’s transport and goods insurance. Ask about this in advance; for very valuable cars, additional insurance is sometimes wise. Reliable transporters make a condition report with photos at loading, secure the vehicle with professional equipment and protect tyres, rims and bodywork.

Because Spain and the Netherlands are both in the EU, there is no customs. Do keep the import formalities in mind:

  • Bringing a car to the Netherlands? Arrange the import and registration through the RDW.
  • Taking a car to another EU country? Your Europe has the rules on registration and insurance.

What to look for when choosing a transporter

  • Experience on the Spain-Netherlands route and knowledge of the loading and unloading points;
  • A clear, insured price, preferably an indicative rate up front, no surprises afterwards;
  • Insurance and a condition report with photos at loading;
  • Reviews and references from previous customers;
  • Good communication, ideally in English, Dutch and Spanish.
